Join PCPG for our Annual Psychoanalytic Couple Psychotherapy Lecture online as we host Amita Sehgal of Tavistock Relationships. Dr. Sehgal will describe how psychoanalytic couple psychotherapy can be used to work with couples in which the absence of sex is a feature of the relationship. Using a contemporary Freudian perspective, as well as viewing this symptom through Glasser’s core complex lens, Dr. Sehgal will offer a perspective that highlights the ways in which anxieties that arise in the earliest relationship between infant and mother are believed to contribute to the claustro-agoraphobic anxieties in adult relating. Additionally, the unconscious dynamics that may be operating in couple relationships in which sex is absent will be explored in the context of the relationship where partners seem intently caught up in the struggle of balancing their need for intimacy alongside preserving their sense of self.
Amita Sehgal, MA, PhD
Amita Sehgal, MA, PhD, is a psychoanalytic couple psychotherapist. She is a Visiting Lecturer at Tavistock Relationships, and Consultant Psychotherapist at The Balint Consultancy. She maintains a private practice in Central London where she works with couples and individuals.
Dr. Sehgal’s publications in the field of couple psychotherapy includes her edited book, Sadism: Psychoanalytic Developmental Perspectives (Karnac-Routledge, 2018). She has a special interest in the neurobiology of contemporary attachment perspectives in couple psychotherapy. Her on-going interest in the psychological process of separation and divorce informs her commitment to resolving family disputes out of court, in a non-confrontational and constructive manner. She also consults to family lawyers, providing them with education, training and bespoke services to maintain and optimize their performance and wellbeing.
Paula Mandel, PhD
Paula Mandel, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, a graduate of PINC. She supervises and teaches at numerous Bay Area locations and is on the teaching faculty at PINC, where she is also co-chair of their Visiting Scholars committee. Her discussion of Jonathon Sklar’s “Violence, Destruction and Survival; Regression at the Level of the Basic Fault” is currently in press. She has a private practice in Berkeley in which she sees individual adults and couples.
